Other Senators participating in the meeting included: Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Harry Reid (D-NV), Jon Corzine (D-NJ), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Daniel Akaka (D-HI), Russell Feingold (D-WI), Paul Wellstone (D-MN) Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Byron Dorgan (D-ND). The agenda of the meeting focussed on the most effective ways to promote tolerance and acceptance in light of the backlash against Arabs and Muslims since September 11. The Senators were briefed about the difficulties faced by members of the community and were urged to remain engaged in defending Arab and Muslim civil liberties. The participants also raised various issues pertaining to foreign policy and national security including the political implications of the ongoing campaign against terror. ADC President Ziad Asali described the meeting as "one of the most impressive and productive meetings we have ever had with members of the Senate. The discussion was frank, substantive and very useful to all parties." In addition to Asali, ADC was represented by Vice President Khalil E. Jahshan and national board member Hani Findakly. |
