The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) met with the Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Cari M. Dominguez, today to discuss issues relating to the rise of discrimination in the workplace since the horrific attacks of September 11th, 2001. The meeting was attended by ADC President Ziad Asali, David Frank, EEOC Legal Counsel; Director of Field Management Programs, Jacqueline R. Bradley; and ADC Legal Advisor, Carol Khawly, JD, among others. ADC has been receiving a higher number of employment discrimination incidents after September 11th and this has been a major issue of concern. After welcoming remarks by Chair Dominguez, Dr. Asali applauded the EEOCs efforts in reaching out to the Arab-American community. Dr. Asali noted that ADC has already been contacted by several individuals from the office of the EEOC Vice-Chair, Mr. Paul Igasaki, who have offered support and assistance in various ways. Dr. Asali also stressed the need for cooperation between ADC and the EEOC to monitor cases of employment discrimination. ADC Legal Advisor, Carol Khawly, presented an overview of the alleged employment discrimination incidents reported to ADC and also emphasized the need for further outreach efforts. In addition to discussing the rights of employees in the workplace, the meeting included discussions on how to reach out, inform, and educate employers about their responsibilities in the workplace. The translation of EEOC documents and fact sheets into Arabic in order to reach a larger number of our community was also discussed. In efforts to cooperate with the EEOC, ADC proposed assisting in the translation of EEOC fact sheets which provide information on employment discrimination. ADC will also be working with the various EEOC Field Offices across the country providing them with contacts for setting up informational meetings through EEOC program analysts. The EEOC has already increased outreach activities to employer communities, informed all district directors by teleconference for the need to be more responsive to individuals complaints, contacted regional attorneys and have assigned individuals to keep track of charges filed across the nation. ADC is pleased to be working with the EEOC and commends them for their efforts. |
