ADC Denounces Trump Administration’s Attack on Transgender Civil Rights

Washington, DC | www.adc.org | October 25, 2018 | This past weekend, the New York Times revealed that the Trump administration seeks to exclude transgender Americans from the protections of federal civil rights laws by implementing a misguided and narrow definition of gender. Contradictory to scientific study and legal precedent, the administration threatens the federal legal protections of approximately 1.4 million Americans by insisting that gender is determined by genitalia at birth and unchangeable. In doing so, the administration will roll back progressive policies that broadened protections for the LGBTQ community and fluid recognition of gender identity.

ADC unequivocally condemns such government action, which will result in discriminatory and repressive consequences for members of the LGBTQ community. The administration’s reported plans are an unacceptable and hateful attack on transgender Americans and are the latest effort in a consistent stream of policies that threaten the rights of the LGBTQ community.

ADC calls on the administration to reject any plans to remove legal protections of transgender Americans. We need to be working on expanding civil rights protections and preventing discrimination in all forms. ADC is a firm believer in equal rights and treatment for all Americans, including the LGBTQ community.
