Congressman Ellison to Receive ADC Trailblazer Award During ADC Convention

Washington, DC | May 17, 2007 | www.adc.org | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud to announce that Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), will receive the ADC Trailblazer Award at the ADC Annual National Convention. The Annual National Convention, “Toward a More Perfect Union,” will take place at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, June 8 to 10. Ellison will join what is consistently the largest annual gathering of Arab Americans and their friends in our nation‘s capital to personally accept this award. Previous recipients of the ADC Trailblazer Award have included US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Dean of the White House Press Corps Helen Thomas.
In 2006, Ellison made history by becoming the first Muslim-American elected to the United States Congress; additionally, he is also the first African American elected to Congress from the state of Minnesota. Ellison represents the state‘s most ethnically diverse district which includes the city of Minneapolis and its surrounding suburbs.
As a member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, Ellison serves on two subcommittees important to the Arab-American community‘s domestic legislative priorities: the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties and the Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law.
The freshman member from Minnesota has established a career of advocacy focused on promoting civil and human rights, peace, and prosperity for working families. Ellison served two terms in the Minnesota State House of Representatives prior to his election to the US Congress. The congressman is originally from Michigan.
