ADC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Responsibilities:

Work closely with the Director of Education and Outreach in mobilizing a grassroots network of ADC chapters and activists in outreach to educators to encourage creative teaching and instructional programs about Arab Americans and the Arab world in elementary, middle and high schools. The September 11 crisis has opened a great many doors to reaching into school systems. We are now attempting to work with schools in a more systematic manner. The position also includes outreach to non-Arab organizations and government agencies on Middle East and Arab American issues. Recent intern assignments include:

Outreach to national educational organizations and publications in campaign to put Arab Americans on the multicultural map.
Respond to information requests from educators and activists.
Assist in cultivating national network of Arab American educators.
Develop lesson plans on the Arab world. Write articles for the ADC newsletter.
Cultivate national network of education activists.
Work with peace organizations to lift economic sanctions against Iraqi civilians. Promote Palestinian rights and self-determination.

Skills

EXCELLENT WRITING SKILLS.
Seriousness of intent; good work habits.
Knowledge of the Arab world or the Arab American community.
Education majors especially welcome.
Preference given to graduate students, juniors and seniors.

Summer program is full time; schedule is negotiable during the school semester. Course credit can be arranged. A small stipend is available. Internships which receive course credit are unpaid.
