ARAB AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIPS

ADC frequently gets requests from students and parents regarding scholarship funds earmarked for Arab Americans (or Arab students in the U.S.).  We have discovered that there are only a few scholarship programs which could be identified.

This list summarizes all the scholarship information which ADC has gathered.  We do not have any additional information.  Applicants must demonstrate both financial need and academic achievement.  Often scholarships are designated for students whose families are affiliated with specific organizations or communities.  If you know of any additional scholarship programs, please notify Marvin Wingfield at (202) 244-2990.

Offers 2-3 scholarships of up to $1000 each year to students in medical, osteopathic or dental school.  The deadline for applications is July 1.

ASAI programs support undergraduate and graduate students from the Arab world, studying in 14 countries.  They include interest-free loans, grants to teachers and doctors in the West Bank and Gaza, and matching funds with the British Council in the U.K. for special medical programs in the West Bank and Gaza.  ASAI also offers university placement, counseling, supervision and employment services.  Students must plan to work and live in the Arab world upon graduation. Over 100 scholarships are awarded each year.  The deadline for applications is May 1.  Final decisions are sent out in early August.

Offers 15 scholarships of $500, mostly to students in Michigan, although others could be considered.  Good personal conduct is also a criterion for eligibility.  The deadline is April.

Offers scholarships to 10 students of Chaldean heritage.  Funds are from business donations.  The amount of the scholarships varies from year to year.

An annual essay contest sponsored by American Arabic and Jewish Friends.  Arab American and Jewish high school juniors and seniors in the Detroit area are paired up to write essays.  The topic this year is AHow can the Arab and Jewish communities of Detroit work together for a better community?@  The deadline for applications is January 22.  Essays are due in April.

The Foundation currently supports 30-35 students who are Lebanese citizens doing graduate work at Boston University.  Scholarships cover tuition and fees only.  Participants must return home to Lebanon to work after completion of their education.  No immigrant students; no dual citizens.  In future years, some scholarships may be designated for other specific universities.

In honor of Dr. Jack Shaheen, a $1000 scholarship is awarded to an Arab-American college student of Journalism, Radio, Television or Film each year.
Who is Eligible:
Juniors, Seniors or graduate students of Arab heritage, who will be attending college during the 2002-2003 academic year. Candidates must have at least a 'B' average. Applicants must be US citizens
To apply, send the following:

  • A one page statement explaining why you merit the scholarship.
  • Two letters of recommendation from media professors.
  • Official transcript stating your grade point average.

Offers about 25 scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students.  Application information is available in February.  The deadline is in April and the awards are announced in May.

Midwest Federation of American Syrian-Lebanese Clubs

Offers 10-20 scholarships of $1000.  Awarded to undergraduates whose families are members of the Federation.  A recommendation by a Federation officer is required.  The Federation has members in 11 states in the upper Midwest.  The deadline for applications is April 3.

Offers 11 scholarships of $1000.  Awarded to undergraduates whose families are members of the Association.  The deadline for applications is June; scholarships are awarded in November.

Offers 7 S. M. Jabara scholarships of $7-10,000 for Americans of Arab descent, sponsored by the Jacobs Family Foundation.  Request consideration for these scholarships when you send in your application.  Decisions are made in January or February as applications come in.
