Mary Harb to receive 2018 Alex Odeh Memorial Award

 
 Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | October 8, 2018 – The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud to announce that it will present the annual Alex Odeh Memorial Award to Ms. Mary Harb.  The Alex Odeh Memorial Award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, public service, and commitment to ADC and the Arab-American Community. Mary is a Palestinian American activist and a longtime champion of women’s rights.

The award will be presented at the Alex Odeh Memorial Dinner as part of the ADC National Convention in Anaheim, California. The dinner will be held on the evening of Saturday October 13 at the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort. Registration to the Convention, which includes a Gala Dinner ticket, is still open!

Twenty five years ago, Mary was a principle founder of the Palestinian American Women’s Association of Southern California (PAWA).  One of the organization’s main objectives is to empower Arab Americans by providing scholarships in higher education to under-privileged female students in Palestine.  We are honored to award Mary, and hope you can join us on the 13th of October.

Biography

Mary Harb is a Palestinian-American activist and a longtime champion of women’s rights.   She is also a is a registered nurse.  Twenty five years ago, Mary was a principle founder of the Palestinian American Women’s Association of Southern California (PAWA).  One of the organization’s main objectives is to empower Arab Americans by providing scholarships in higher education to under-privileged female students in Palestine.  Mary is an active member of the board in Southern Calif., helping families both locally and in Palestine.   Mary is recognized throughout Southern California for her tireless activism and grassroots organizing efforts.

As part of a fact- finding mission, Mary visited Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine.  Additionally, in 2009, she traveled to Gaza to break the US-backed Israeli military imposed siege on Gaza. Mary’s passion for justice has inspired generations of young Palestinian women activists. Mary’s passion for justice has inspired generations of young Palestinian women activists.

Mary has been recognized for her work and efforts. She has received the following awards:

  • Dr. Raymond Jallow Activist Award at ADC convention in Washington DC.
  • Champions of Freedom Award from Party for Southern and Liberation National Conference in Los Angeles in 2010.
  • Community Service Award from The Palestinian American Women’s Association (PAWA) of Southern CA
  • Community Organizing Award in 2012 from Network of Arab American Professionals of Orange County CA.
  • Distinguished Leader Award in 2017 from Arab American Civic Council in Orange County, CA
