This legislation seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the Diversity Visa Program. This diversity visa program has already been under attack and used to enforce the Arab and Muslim Ban. The RAISE Act will limit the President’s discretion in setting the number of refugees admitted annually to the United States and setting limited to 50,000. If enacted, the RAISE Act will reduce the number of family-sponsored immigrants by eliminating the sibling family immigration category and creating a new nonimmigrant classification for the parents of adult United States citizens.
More than 160 national and state organizations signed on to condemn this harmful and misguided proposal. If the RAISE Act is passed into law, this legislation will limit opportunities, preclude the American dream for many, and eventually keep loved ones apart from their immigrant families.
