Take Action: Oppose the Nominations of Senator Sessions to U.S. Attorney General and Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education

Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | January 9, 2017 – The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) calls on all community members to take immediate action against the problematic nominations by President-elect Donald Trump. Contact your Senators offices now and ask that they do not confirm Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, and Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. Both nominees are unqualified for the position they are seeking. Both nominees have engaged in direct actions that harm communities of color, undermine civil rights, and deny equal access and opportunity in education.

Tomorrow, January 10, 2017, the Senate Judiciary will begin the two-day nominee confirmation hearing for Senator Jeff Session for U.S. Attorney General. Throughout his career, Senator Sessions has shown a clear disrespect for the civil rights and human rights and needs of all people. He has shown a striking disregard for the very laws, policies, and programs for which he would be responsible for protecting and promoting as U.S. Attorney General. He has actively engaged in steps to undermine voting rights, and the constitutional rights of Arab and Muslim Americans. The job of the U.S. Attorney General is to protect the civil rights of all Americans, regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion.

On, Wednesday, January 11, 2017, the Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions) Committee will hold the nominee confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. Ms. DeVos has no experience in public education and does not support public education, which is the Secretary of Education’s duty. In Michigan, Ms. DeVos’ “school of choice” and voucher initiatives disparately affected communities of color and inner city youth.
