ADC-Michigan Director attends opening of Civil Rights Art Exhibit

Attorney Fatina Abdrabboh, the Director of ADC-Michigan, recently attended the opening of a new art exhibit at Wayne State University Law School. The exhibit aspires to honor two legendary Civil Rights pioneers — Rosa Parks and U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge, Damon Keith. The event hosted elected officials, academics, and dignitaries from across the state.

Although the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) Michigan is an organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of Arab-Americans, the ADC understands that issues affecting African-Americans often intertwine with issues affecting Arab-Americans. Ms. Abdrabboh reiterated this interconnectedness of the two communities: “Economic justice, civil rights, voting rights, and the criminal justice system are all issues that affect both of our communities and remind us of the need for increased collaboration between our communities”.

ADC-Michigan Director delivers address at Career Day in Hamtramck Middle School

Attorney Fatina Abdrabboh, the Director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) Michigan Regional Office, was recently invited to address students at a school in Hamtramck for their annual Career Day. The mission of Career Day is to introduce students to various careers by inviting community members into the school to discuss their jobs, skills, education and training. Attorney Abdrabboh saw this as an opportunity to stress the importance of education and to educate the children about the benefits of public service and civic engagement. Ms. Abdrabboh met individually with a number of students to discuss her personal journeys, answer questions, and motivate them to explore all options to achieve their individual goals and recognize their potential.  Ms. Abdrabboh spoke candidly to the students, emphasizing the need to make informed decisions in all aspects of their lives, reminding them that the decisions they make now will help shape their lives in the future. “It was an honor to be able to talk to these children and motivate them to work hard toward a career or goals they are passionate about,” said Attorney Abdrabboh.

ADC-Michigan co-sponsored “Know Your Rights” Immigration Seminar

As part of its commitment to empower and educate the Arab-American community, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) Michigan Regional Office co-sponsored a “Know Your Rights” immigration seminar at Fordson High School Auditorium in Dearborn on Monday June 9, 2014.

The purpose of the seminar was to inform community members about their rights and evolving U.S. immigration policies and laws that they may be affected by. Ms. Abdrabboh described the seminar as a “great opportunity for Arab-Americans and others to make informed decisions about their immigration and their lives”. ADC-Michigan Director delivers address at HYPE Athletic Community Banquet

Attorney Fatina Abdrabboh, Director of the ADC-Michigan, delivered an address during the HYPE athletic community banquet on June 5, 2014. The event was attended by over 500 people including elected officials and community leaders.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) Michigan focuses on protecting the civil rights of Arab-Americans. It also understands that supporting community programs such as HYPE athletics actually empowers the community and in turn strengthens civil rights.

THIS WEEK:  ADC NATIONAL CONVENTION!

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is preparing for its 34th National Convention. This year the Convention will be held on Father’s Day Weekend, June 12-15th at the Crystal Gate Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.  In the most literal sense of the phrase, it takes a community to protect our rights and preserve our cultural heritage, which is why this year’s convention theme is: It Takes  a Community.  ADC dedicates the 2014 Annual Convention to you, the community of Arab Americans and supporters who care about issues central to ADC’s work.

This year’s convention will focus on empowering you as community member activists through a forum that demonstrates how we can learn from one another. More specifically, the forum will discuss how to most effectively confront the challenges the Arab American community is faced with today.  For more information, please visit:  http://convention.adc.org
