Don’t Bring the SAFE Act Up For a Vote

On Tuesday, we asked you to call congress and ask to vote no on the “SAFE Act,” H.R. 2278, introduced by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC). Unfortunately, members of the House Judiciary Committee passed the SAFE Act that day despite a nationwide opposition to it.If enacted, the SAFE Act’s single-minded focus on immigration enforcement will adversely affect the Arab American community by creating an environment of rampant racial profiling and unconstitutional detentions, allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers wider authority to arrest people, and authorizing states and localities to enforce immigration laws themselves.

In addition, the SAFE Act gives power to local law enforcement officers to arrest potential criminal aliens. This authority can be easily be abused and might lead to a rise in detentions and deportations of Arab immigrants to the U.S.

We Still have a chance to defeat the SAFE Act. Contact your House Representative now and ask them to oppose the safe act.

In addition, you can call House Leaders Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) now and ask them not to bring the “SAFE Act” up for a vote! Here are their phone numbers:

Rep. Boehner: (202) 225-0600
Rep. Pelosi: (202) 225-4965

If you call Rep. Pelosi and/or Speaker Boehner, please send us a follow up email to help us track our impact.
