Have a Local Town Hall Meeting on Iraq

ADC urges its members to have their Congressperson hold town hall meetings across the country about the prospect of bombing Iraq. There are several congresspeople who have voiced some concerns about bombing and would be particularly receptive:
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tx),
Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.),
Rep. Peter Starke (D-Ca),
Rep. Horn (R-Ca),
Rep. Rohrabacher (R-Ca),
Rep. Bernie Sanders (Ind.-Vt),
Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass),
Rep. McGovern(D-Mass),
Rep. Clemns (Tenn.),
Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.),
Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill),
Rep. John Conyers (D-Migh.),
Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Migh.),
Rep. Pete Defazio (D-Oreg.),
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA),
Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), Sen.
Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN),
Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA),
Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC)
War may be imminent. Congress is still on recess and so can have town meetings the next three days — CALL NOW!
ACTION:
Call your Congressperson (and your two Senators). Ask them to have a local town hall meeting on Iraq. The Congressional switchboard:202-224-3121. Or 800-522-6721 works from some areas. Also, call their local office. Get people you know to call, too. Though E-Mail is faster, phone calls are more effective right now!
Talking points:
* Many Americans have deep concerns about the wisdom and the morality of the Clinton administration’s drive towards bombing Iraq.
* A bombing is unlikely to solve any of the problems the administration says it is concerned about. It will only add to the suffering of the Iraqi people.
* Democracy calls for us to seriously consider the prospect of war. The burden of proof is on those who want war. They have not met that threshold. This is not a decision to be taken lightly and there should be meaningful dialogue with the people.
* The decision for war should be by Congress and it is unclear what the majority’s position is.
