Washington, DC | May 15, 2006 | Founded in 1980, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is celebrating its 26th year of dedicated service to civil and human rights. We hope that you will join us at ADC’s Annual Convention June 15-18, 2006.
CIVIL RIGHTS LUNCHEON, SATURDAY, JUNE 17
As with previous Conventions, civil and immigrant rights and liberties will be a major focus for speakers, panelists and award recipients on Saturday, June 17. The Annual Civil Rights Awards Luncheon, scheduled from 12:30-2:00 pm EST, will serve as the primary forum for convention attendees to learn about the issues affecting our rights and the steps our government, as well as other civil rights organizations, are taking to address civil rights and liberties, and immigrants’ rights in a constructive and effective approach.

*American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA): ‘Excellence in Advocacy’ Award
*Daniel Sutherland, Director for the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the Department of Homeland Security: ‘Friend in Government’ Award
*Tefft Smith, Esq., Kirkland & Ellis: ‘Pro-Bono Attorney of the Year’ Award *Timothy Clinton, Esq., Covington & Burling: ‘Pro-Bono Attorney of the Year’ Award
FEATURED CIVIL RIGHTS SPEAKERS
*Wan Kim, Assistant Attorney General, US Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division. Kim will be the keynote speaker at the Annual Civil Rights Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 17.
* Senator Russell Feingold (D-WI), recipient of ADC’s 2006 ‘Civil Liberties Trailblazer’ Award
* Stuart Levy, Undersecretary, Treasury Department. Levy will be a speaker on a panel entitled “Charities Under the Microscope.”
CIVIL RIGHTS PANELS
One of the highlights on Saturday, June 17, is a panel entitled, “Civil Liberties: The Year in Review,” facilitated by Nawar Shora, Esq., ADC Director of the Law Enforcement Outreach Program (LEOP). Panelists include: Daniel Sutherland, Esq., Department of Homeland Security (DHS,) Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties; John Miller, Assistant Director of Public Affairs, FBI; Gregory Nojeim, Esq., Associate Director, Washington Legislative Office, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU); and Christina DeConcini, Esq., Director of Policy, National Immigration Forum.
Another highlight is a first of its kind debate between David Cole, Esq., of the Georgetown University Law Center and Bradford Berenson, Esq., former Associate Counsel for President Bush between 2001 and 2003. These two experts will debate the “Patriot Act and Other Post 9/11 Policies.” The debate will be facilitated by Hussein Ibish, Executive Director, Hala Maksoud Foundation.
Other confirmed panels will include “From the Victim’s Mouth” where attendees can hear directly from individuals affected by discrimination and how ADC played a role in assisting them, and “Small Business Administration and Arab Americans” where attendees will learn how Arab-American-owned businesses benefit from legal minority status.
